Notes from Yukiko’s Desk

Dear brothers and sisters of God’s beloved creation,

As reported in the media, in recent months, the world has experienced a series of natural disasters. The year has seen record-breaking heatwaves, destructive floods, wildfires, and droughts. The toll of these disasters has been severe, with thousands of people affected and millions displaced. Speaking of Europe's heatwave, for instance, according to studies, event would have been "virtually impossible" just 50 years ago without human-caused climate change. New Zealand, with its mild, maritime climate, might seem insulated from such extremes. But apparently it, too, is expected to experience significantly warmer temperatures in the future. So, what can be done?

In this crisis moment in the life of our planet, both we, humans, and the rest of creation need this season of creation more than ever, I believe. We need time and space to notice and listen to all of creation, to wonder at and delight in all that God has made, to mourn and protest the destruction and suffering that creation has endured, and to draw strength and hope from God, the giver of life, to address the ecological harms and challenges before us.

To contemplate (in the ordinary sense of the word) during a crisis might increase the possibility that we miss or misread signs of danger in our immediate environment. In light of this, I’d like to do “Contemplation of Creation” service at Holy Cross this Sunday. With photos which some of our whanau generously shared and quotes and reflection questions, we will have time to pause reflect with gratitude on the gift of creation. In doing so, we will consider the plight of the earth and of those most impacted by environmental problems, and discern how we are 20th September 25th Sunday in Ordinary time - Year A called to respond. I will make some copies of the photos for those who wish to take home.
