Notes from Yukiko’s Desk

Dear friends of Christ,

This week, Les, Bruce and I attended the diocesan ministry conference for two days. The theme of the conference was “Faithful and Fruitful- Leading in change.”

The biblical theme chosen was Nehemiah. The story of Nehemiah provides a compelling look at leadership and resilience in the face of adversity. Tasked with rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls after the Babylonian exile, Nehemiah exemplifies how determination and strategic planning can lead to significant societal transformation.

One of the keynote speakers, Rev. Dr. Carolyn Robertson, the Vicar at All Saints, Burwood in Christchurch, shared their story, modern version of Nehemiah’s restoration. I was struck by the story of their extraordinary transformation journey of renewal, resistance, prayer and hope after the 2011 earthquake. All they had was $200 in their bank account and broken pieces. But using materials from old Church buildings and the funds from the insurance payout, they transformed the university student bar into a Church which is a vibrant community of young and old. On weekdays, many people meet for various activities. It was also a great opportunity for us to get connected with others at the conference. I felt refreshed and challenged. (The photos of this page are All Saints in 2025).

Arohanui,

Yukiko
